As far as Hollow Knight Bosses go, the Dung Defender is a little bit of a pushover. But even still, if you don’t learn their attack patterns and give them the respect they deserve, you’ll find yourself sitting on a bench wondering where it all went wrong.

Hollow Knight Full Walkthrough – How To Beat Dung Defender

Finding Dung Defender + Preparation

As we mentioned in our Royal Waterways guide, Dung Defender can be found east of the bench found in the center of the Royal Waterways.

When you enter an area caked in poop and hear the jovial cries of Dung Defender inviting you in, you’ll know you’re in the right place.

As for preparing for this fight, we would urge you to have at least the first Nail Upgrade before taking this one on. Then, as for charms, The Mark of Pride, Stalwart Shell, and Steady Body are great options here to get as many hits in as possible and remain on the offensive. But honestly, you can go with whatever loadout you prefer here.

How to Beat Dung Defender – Strategy

The Dung Defender tends to open up their battle with a Dung Throw attack, which will see them throw one or two dung balls at the player’s location.

Avoiding them isn’t much of a problem, but they remain on the field of play, bouncing around, so you need to be aware of their flight path, all the while watching what Dung Defender will do next.

Dung Defender, after this attack, will then go underground, either staying down there completely or rising up and down like a dolphin leaping from the sea. If he’s fully submerged, you have very little to worry about, but if he’s bobbing in and out, be sure to give them space.

When they rise from the ground again, they perform a raining dung attack that will cause four projectiles to fall from the sky, two on each side of the Dung Defender.

The best thing to do here is to position yourself just left or right of where they rise, as they will not harm you, and their projectiles won’t hit you, giving you a great opportunity to land repeated hits.

This is essentially the entire battle, but occasionally, the Dung Defender will beat their chest and perform a special attack that has them dive underground and leap out, performing their raining dung attack rapidly.

It’s best to just let them tire themselves out here, as attacking them in this mode is more trouble than it’s worth.

Then, in the latter stages of the fight, when they throw their dung, they will also roll up into a ball and bounce around the arena, adding a third hazard to this attack.

You’ll need to knock down Dung Defender a total of five times, and upon the fifth stagger, they will fly off into the background, akin to Team Rocket in the Pokemon Anime, and you’ll have defeated another Hollow Knight Boss. Congrats.

Rewards For Defeating Dung Defender

Seeing as this is a pretty easy fight in relation to others in the game, your rewards are pretty conservative.

You’ll get the Defender’s Crest for defeating Dung Defender, which is a charm that has the player emit a smelly odor that causes damage to all those in close proximity to your Knight.

It’s a fun Charm that unlocks some new dialogue with NPCs, but in truth, in combat, it isn’t all that useful due to the fact that in most fights, you’ll be on the move and keeping your distance. But hey, it’s better than nothing.

Not to mention, the player will also now have access to Isma’s Grove, the area that Dung Defender was guarding along with the Ancient Basin further down below.

Could Use a Shower After That One

So there you have it, folks, another Hollow Knight Boss vanquished, and by far the smelliest one you’ll encounter in the entire game.

We hope that this guide helps you take down this confident boss, and as always, thanks for reading Indie Game Culture.
