Hollow Knight Full Walkthrough – How To Beat Soul Master

The City of Tears is a pretty anticlimactic place. You expect to find a grand kingdom at the heart of Hallowsnest, but instead, as Quirrel eludes to, there’s not much to see here at all.

That being said, there is a boss battle to be had here, and seeing as you have navigated your way through the City of Tears, I suppose that it’s about time we run through the fight with Soul Master.

Soul Master is a beefed-up version of the Soul Twister, and considering how annoying they already are, it goes without saying that this is a real test of skill. Without further delay, here is Indie Game Culture’s Hollow Knight Full Walkthrough – How to Beat Soul Master.

Where To Find Soul Master & Preparation

Soul Master is found deep into the City of Tears in a sub-area known as the Soul Sanctum. You’ll need to work through this area, unlocking various doorways and using seemingly endless elevators to get around.

You’ll find Soul Master on a rooftop area. Initially, you might not even notice that a boss battle is beginning, but if you check in the distance, you’ll notice that Soul Master is on their way.

For this fight, we would urge you to equip The Mark of Pride, as the added range will really help in this battle. Plus, we would also encourage players to try to have their first full set of mask shards by this point.

How to Beat Soul Master – Strategy

Soul Master is a two-phase fight, with the first phase making up the majority of the fight. As mentioned, the Soul Master is an upgrade of the Soul Twister with a hint of the Soul Warrior, so expect a range of fireballs and stabbing attacks.

The most dangerous attack within this first stage is the ground slam, which will see him teleport above you and then slam down to the floor, creating harmful ripples moving left and right.

The best way to avoid this is to dash out from below him and then time your jump over the shockwave just after he slams. Also, be aware that they occasionally use a takeout animation, so take a split second before reacting to ensure they will follow through.

Second, you have their fireball attacks, which are just like the Soul Twister enemies and will hone in on the player to an extent. The key here is to Jump over them. If he casts this attack while in the air, move away, whereas if he does this while airborne, jump over the fireball.

These are the two most dangerous attacks, but you also need to watch out for a running attack where you’ll need to jump over them, and then you have the pinwheel of fireballs, which can be easily avoided.

But honestly, I think this is the best time to land hits, treating the fireballs like a jump rope. But if you need to play it safe, then do that. It’s also a pretty good opportunity to heal.

You’ll need to stagger them four times, and the fight won’t get any tougher throughout. Upon knocking them down the third time, it will seem like you have won the fight, and you’ll see a ln ability there to be claimed. But when you do, you’ll start the final section of this fight. So, heal up before you grab this item.

When they reanimate, they will slam through the glass floor below, and you’ll fight within the Soul Sanctum. The only real change with this section is that Soul Master will perform a series of rapid slam attacks, and these should be avoided just as you would their normal slam attacks. Don’t try to sneak a few hits in; it’s more trouble than it’s worth.

Other than that, the only difference here is that he will float in midair, so you’ll need to utilize upward attacks, and his fireballs are a little more frequent. But the good news is that after one stagger, they will go down for good, meaning you’ll have beaten The Soul Master.

Rewards For Beating The Soul Master

The reward for beating the Soul Master is a new skill called Desolate Dive. This ability allows you to use a portion of your SOUL meter to slam through brittle surfaces underfoot and obviously can be used in a combat capacity as well.

This skill is vital for exploring new areas of the map, such as the Ancient Basin, the Royal Waterways, and many more.

After you defeat the Soul Master, you’ll need to use this skill to get out of Soul Sanctum, and then you’ll want to set your sights on the Royal Waterways.

Your Soul is Mine!

So there you have it, another boss defeated in Hollow Knight. This one can be tricky, especially if you struggle to dodge those fireballs, but with some practice, you’ll be able to Desolate Dive in no time at all. We hope this helps, and as always, thanks for reading Indie Game Culture.
