Palworld Best Starter Pals Guide

In case you somehow missed it, there is a new game catching the eye of players everywhere, and its elevator pitch is ‘It’s Pokemon with guns!’

It’s a pretty strong concept if you ask me, and having poured plenty of hours into this game already, it showcases that mashing together the Survival mechanics of a game like Sons of the Forest, or Valheim with the cute and cuddly creature tamers out there like Pokemon and Cassette Beasts can be done to great effect.

The only issue for new players when entering this vast and bustling world of monsters and machine guns, is deciding which one of these animated little critters should make up your starting party.

Well, we aim to help with that, offering a list of the ten best starting options ranked, allowing you to pick the strongest team to take on your first boss! Without further delay, here is Indie Game Culture’s Palworld Best Starting Pals Guide.

Selection Criteria

We will be basing our selection for this ranked list based on the following criteria:

  • We will be looking at Pal’s stats, movesets, typings, and all other discernible assets, and then comparing and contrasting
  • We will also look at their base-building skill sets so they can be helpful when outside of battle
  • We will be considering availability during the first few hours of gameplay
  • We will also be considering their unique abilities and the items needed to make these work

Okay, grab your totally legally distinct Pal Spheres, and let’s go catch them all. Am I even allowed to say that? Don’t tell Nintendo.

#10 – Cattiva

We begin with one of the first three Pals that you are likely to find in the game. The opening area is littered with Lamball, Chikipi, and Cattiva, but Cattiva is the pick of the bunch.

This is because they are the best physical attacker of the three, with a pretty effective rapid attack move. Plus, they also act as great worker Pals who can mine stone for you while you’re out doing things away from the base.

I wouldn’t keep them in your party for a long time, but they are the best of the immediate options available to you.

#9 – Cremis

While Cremis doesn’t seem like a great Pal to add to your roster, they are more than just a fluffy Eevee clone. Cremis’ primary use, outside of being a reasonably useful Earth Type Pal, is that they can be placed at the base and used for Farming.

You will need to unlock and build a Ranch at your Base, but when you do this will allow you to farm lots of Wool, which can then be used to craft Cloth, which can then be used to craft various types of armor.

Lamball can also be used like this, but Cremis provides more Wool, and is a better fighter if needed, so they’re the better option of the two.

#8 – Lifmunk

If you’re on the lookout for a Grass Type Pal, you really have two options, Gumboss or Lifmunk, and of the two, Lifmunk is our pick by a landslide. This is because when placed at the base this creature is able to plant crops and is also to do Logging Work as well, serving as a better all-rounder than Gumboss.

Not to mention that Lifmunk has a really cool special ability that allows you to unlock a Submachine gun for this little Grass-Type, and it can be unlocked pretty quickly, too, at level 11.

#7 – Pengullet

There are a number of reasons why Pengullet is the water type of choice early in the game. Firstly, Pengullet is the most accessible option by some distance, with other options like Fuack and Teafant being further away from your starting position.

Second, Pengullet has access to a Rocket Launcher Pal Ability, which admittedly does take a while to unlock at Level 17, but is undeniably very cool.

Then third, Pengullet is a dual typing as they offer Frost and Water options for the player. Then, outside of that, they can water crops at the base, they tend to be great for helping craft materials, and catching them gets you Pal Fluid drops, needed to build a Hot Spring, which is something you’ll want to build ASAP.

#6 – Killamari

If you’re looking for a spooky Dark Type, your two main early options are Daedream and Killamari, and of the two, Killamari is a much more fun option.

From a base building perspective, outside of being a better transporter of goods around the base they aren’t a tonne of help. However, they are a little less flimsy compared to Daedream in battle, with a moveset that offers more DPS, and they also have a fantastic traversal ability that allows you to use them as a Glider, unlocked at Level 9, which is a lot more proficient than the basic glider you can craft in the early-game.

#5 – Foxparks

If you’re looking for literal firepower, then you can’t really go wrong with Foxparks, the most easily accessible fire-type Pal when you begin the game.

This fiery fox has some great ranged flame attacks, and is an absolute must-have in your beginner Pal party, as there aren’t many other Pals with the battle acumen this one has early on. Especially when you unlock this Pal’s Flamethrower ability which can be unlocked very quickly at Level 6.

Then, to top it all off, this Pal is able to Kindle fires and ignite furnaces, allowing you to create Ingots for metal materials a little later into the game

#4 – Melpaca

Now, we move to the top of this list, which is exclusively filled with early-game mounts. These Pals are useful not only because they are strong battlers and base workers, but also because they can be used to get around the map faster.

Our first mount listed is Melpaca, a neutral type Pal that offers decent damage in battle, and can be used to farm Wool with the help of a Ranch.

However, the main appeal of Melpaca is that it is a super-accessible mount in the early game and the Mount Ability can be unlocked as early as Level 7. So, if you want a mount as quickly as possible, this is the one to go for, but there are a few better options if you want to upgrade.

#3 – Rushoar

If you’re looking for a Pal that will be able to serve as a mount and also serve as a member of the party that can make a difference when taking on the Rayne Syndicate Tower Boss, Zoe, and Grizzbolt, then Rushoar is a perfect candidate.

They are an Earth Type Pal, meaning they are highly effective against electric types. When at your base, they are great at mining, so they’ll up your stone production, and when mounted, they can also charge at Boulders and pick up a tonne of stone, ore, and Palladium without even needing to dismount.

#2 – Eikthyrdeer

Another one of those upgrades is Eikthyrdeer, yet another primarily neutral type Pal. They tend to be a little more useful when back at base as they have access to Level 2 Lumbering, allowing you to farm Wood much faster than usual, and in battle, they are a little more hardy than Melpaca and Rushoar.

It will take you slightly longer to unlock their mount ability as it’s unlocked at Level 12, but it’s worth the wait as this mount has access to a double jump ability, making them much better at traversal overall; plus, aesthetically, it’s more extra, and we are here for that as well!

#1 – Arsox

Then lastly, we have Arsox, which is a tough early game Pal to acquire, but if you’re lucky and know where to look, you can add this brilliant flame-type Pal to your line-up, and chances are, they will stay in your main party for quite some time.

The easiest way to acquire this Pal early is by making a beeline for the region where you find Free Pal Activists. Then you’ll need to locate one of their camps. You’ll likely be too low-level to fight your way through, but if the enemies at the camp are distracted by nearby Pals, you may be able to sneak in, unlock the Cage, and free the Pal inside, which is most likely going to be Arsox.

Arsox is a beast in battle, using ranged fireballs and charge attacks to decimate enemies, and also provides Level 2 Kindling when back at your base for quicker Furnace production.

Then, to top it all off, they serve as a mount as well, which is unlocked at level 16 and has the unique ability to keep the rider warm in cold environments.
