Hollow Knight Full Walkthrough – The Forgotten Crossroads

Getting Your Bearings

Beginning from the bench in Dirtmouth, we would first urge you to sit and recharge your Lifeblood, and also equip your Fury of the Fallen Charm acquired in King’s Pass.

Then after this, head right and jump down into the Forgotten Crossroads. Then, immediately head left, which will take you into an expansive, long vertical room with lots of platforms and enemies.

Make a note that on the other side of the room up top is where the Grubfather lives, but instead of visiting them, allow yourself to fall to the bottom and then head down the bottom middle opening.

When you do, you should hear Cornifer, an NPC, murmuring and humming a tune. This is the Cartographer, a character that will sell you a map of the immediate area for 30 Geo. Take him up on the offer, and this will also open up the Merchant’s Store in Dirtmouth as a result.

Also, for future reference, as you unlock new areas of the game, you’ll need to find Cornifer to start mapping the area. He’s usually relatively easy to find, but if you need a hint on where he is, all you need to do is follow the trail of sheets of paper leading to him.

You’ll want to head back there, but only when you have a good supply of Geo to buy what you need. So feel free to explore the area for a while, defeat enemies, and find Caches to up your Geo count. Then when you have about 300+ Geo, head back to Dirtmouth.

Upon arrival, you’ll notice that the shop in town is now open for business. Head inside and talk to Iselda, and with all your Geo, you’ll want to purchase a Wayward Compass Charm, and a Quill.

This will allow you to see yourself on the map, and fill in new areas as you explore when you rest at a bench. These will cost 220 and 120 Geo, respectively.

Exploring The Forgotten Crossroads

After this, you’ll want to make sure that you have explored the initial area in order to find the Mini-Boss protecting your first Grub.

Then also, you’ll find the second Grub in the area left of the cartographer past all of the Goams that pop up from the ground.

You can also get a third Grub early on, but it’s honestly better to wait until you have Monarch Wings and a Crystal Heart unless you are very good at Nail Jumping.

You can also find Quirrel outside the Stone Egg just right of where you drop into The Forgotten Crossroads. It’s good to know where they are for future reference, but right now, aside from a little chat, they aren’t much use to you.

Then, when you feel well-versed in all the areas of the Forgotten Crossroads, you should make your way right to the Cartographer, and eventually, you will come to a room with a Bench and a Stag Station. You’ll need to pay 50 Geo to unlock it, but it’s worth doing.

This will allow you to travel to Dirtmouth from here and begin your quest to unlock all the Stag Stations in the game, which makes traveling the world so much easier and more efficient.

At this point, check your map, and up above where you are now, you’ll see your first boss marked. This is where you should head now, as it is now time to take on the False Knight.

A Fun Introduction

If you’re someone who’s quite new to Metroidvanias, you’ll now know that even in the earliest stages, Hollow Knight isn’t a game that pulls any punches.

However, I hope that our guide allowed you to navigate this opening area without too much hassle, and as always, thank you for reading Indie Game Culture.
