Sable All Butterfly and Dragonfly Locations

Sable is a game that I love in spite of its issues. I adore the art style, the world that the player gets to explore, the glider mechanics, and, indeed, the collections you will need to complete to call yourself a Sable completionist.

Players throughout their Gliding will need to collect Chum Eggs, a series of Fish, and a variety of wild Butterflies and Dragonflies.

We already covered all the locations of each fish in the game, but if you want to find all the Butterflies and Dragonflies in this open-world indie, then stick around. This is Indie Game Culture’s Sable All Butterfly and Dragonfly Locations Guide.

Finding The Vivarium

While you can start collecting Fish and Butterflies right from the start of your adventure, you won’t have a quest where you can turn them in until you locate the Vivarium, a piece of content that PC players will remember fondly as DLC content.

The Vivarium in Sable is located in the north-west corner of The Wash. If you head west at The Wyrm, you can’t miss it.

When you do find it, you’ll want to head inside, where you will find Researcher Casii, who is researching the wildlife in the region.

She will task the player with exploring all the segments of the map to find critters and fill the Vivarium with wildlife, a task you will need to take on if you want to earn the Vivacious Vivarium achievement. Plus, when you collect each critter, they actually show up in the Vivarium, which is neat!

For those who crave a TL; Dr section, I am happy to oblige. Here is a list of all the Butterflies and Dragonflies, along with a quick location. But stay put if you want more detail on any of these creatures:

Chalk Butterfly: Pretty much anywhere in The Wash
Crystal Butterfly: Near crystals in Hakoa
Nimoor Butterfly: Travel to the Forest in The Wash. Then Grab the blue glowing Plants and throw them to reveal these Butterflies.
Oasis Dragonfly: Can be found near bodies of water
Salt Butterfly: Found in The Waste near flowers and foliage
Shaded Leaf Butterfly: In Redsee, specifically in the Palm Forest or the Thieving Magpie Well
Stepwell Dragonfly: Located in the Thieving Magpie Well
Sunshine Butterfly: Commonly found in Sanshee but only during the daytime

Okay, if you’re still a little lost and confused, then stick around, as I’ll pinpoint the location of each of these Butterflies and Dragonflies. Let’s go!

All Sable Butterfly and Dragonfly Locations

#1 – Chalk Butterfly

Region: The Wash

We begin with a trip to The Wash, where you will be able to find the Chalk Butterfly. Generally speaking, you can find these Butterflies all over The Wash, but if you want to find out with as little hassle as possible, I would suggest you go to the Dead Forest, or, alternatively, The Watch.

#2 – Crystal Butterfly

Region: Hokoa

If you travel to Hakoa and scale up the huge Mountain to the Crystal Plateau, you’ll struggle not to find one of these Butterflies. These Butterflies only appear near Crystal Pillars in the region, but considering there is an abundance of Crystal around the place, you’ll spot one of these in no time.

#3 – Nimoor Butterfly

Region: The Wash

These are easily the most difficult-to-catch critters on this list, mainly because they can only be caught in a specific time period and by using a certain method that isn’t all that clear unless you get sent on a specific quest. To catch Nimoor Butterflies, the player will need to wait until 21:00, and then you will need to travel to The Dead Forest in The Wash.

During this time in The Dead Forest, you will notice that certain plants glow a faint blue color. These plants have Orbs that players can pick up and throw. So grab one and toss it on the ground. This will cause it to chatter, and within these Orbs are Nimoor Butterflies.

You can collect these at anytime, but it’s probably a little more efficient if you collect these at the same time as you complete the ‘Tough Nut to Crack’ questline.

#4 – Oasis Dragonfly

Region: Various

Next, we have the Oasis Dragonfly, which is the only critter that isn’t region-specific. This Dragonfly will appear around bodies of water all over Midden.

This means that you’ll almost definitely encounter one on your travels, but if you want to grab one right here and now, the best place to go is to the City of Eccria, because there is a huge body of water just outside the city gates.

Swim around for a little while and check the little islands in the lake. Before long, you’ll be able to nab on Oasis Dragonfly.

#5 – Salt Butterfly

Region: The Wastes

The Salt Butterfly is native to The Wastes, and, by all accounts, is a pretty common Butterfly that’s easy to find while exploring this region.

This area is pretty barren, but if you find any areas with flowers and vegetation, you need to go check it out, because Salt Butterflies only spawn in areas with Foliage. So, provided you can find some plant life in The Wastes, you can add this one to your collection.

#6 – Shaded Leaf Butterfly

Region: Redsee

This is the first of two critters that are found in the Thieving Magpie Well. To find this one, you will need to climb the walls of the well and find some hanging ivy, as the Shaded Leaf Butterfly only appears near this type of plant.

Considering you’ll have to jump into this well at some point if you want to complete the ‘Sometimes a Well is Just a Well’ questline, the best course of action is to glide down slowly, and when you spot one, float on over and grab it before proceeding to the bottom of the well where you will find Micah.

These can also be found in the Palm Forest in Redsee, but because you can kill two birds with one stone, you should just head to the Thieving Magpie Well instead.

#7 – Stepwell Dragonfly

Region: Redsee

Then, the second Thieving Magpie Well critter is the Stepwell Dragonfly, which is found right at the bottom of the well, floating atop the body of water.

In truth, you can actually catch the Stepwell Dragonfly and the Shaded Leaf Butterfly within a few steps of each other near this body of water, so if you want to be super-efficient, you can do things that way.

#8 – Sunshine Butterfly

Region: Sanshee

Then we end this list with the Sunshine Butterfly, which is ironically the first one you will probably catch in the game as it is found in the starting region of Sanshee.

This one can only be found during the daytime and generally tends to float around near plants and foliage. These are very common Butterflies, so if you glide around Sanshee for a few minutes, you will almost definitely find one.

Rewards For Collecting All Dragonflies and Butterflies

Sable Ps Plus : r/sablegame

Sadly, the player will not receive a Mask for their efforts, because, as mentioned, this was DLC content. However, the player will earn the Vivacious Vivarium achievement for their efforts, and will also gain access to new items from the Vivarium Merchant, Sola.

You will be able to buy clothing and a new Bike, both of which resemble either a Dragonfly, or a Butterfly. Performance-wise, it’s not the best bike, but you can’t deny, it looks damn cool.

Each bike part costs 150 each, the Butterfly Trousers cost 250, and the Butterfly Top costs 400.

Master Insect Hunter

So there you have it, guys, all the locations of Butterflies and Dragonflies in Sable, the wonderful indie open-world adventure.

I hope that this makes collecting these creatures much easier for you and allows you to make the Vivarium a more lively and vibrant place to visit. As always, thanks for reading Indie Game Culture!
