If you’re in the process of completing the Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden Main Quest, ‘The Woodfolk’, then you’ll have one of two questlines to follow to proceed.
You can either take on Prudence in All Things, or Hammer and Tongs. Hammer and Tongs is a Haunting Case concerning Fortune Heayton, a renowned blacksmith who seems to have lost their touch, and it’s your job to make sense of this and uncover the otherworldly reason for this change in circumstances.
It’s a case of murder and intrigue, and we need to get to the bottom of this right away, so let’s get going to the forge. This is Indie Game Culture’s Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden Hammer and Tongs Guide.

Investigate The Forge
To begin this quest, you’ll need to head to the Blacksmith’s home at camp, and you’ll need to take the time to inspect items in the forge. Here, you’ll find shoddy equipment, a forge missing all of its tools, and saltwater ripples that resonate with a ghost from the beyond who continually shouts, ‘Mine, All Mine.’
After investigating this Forge, you’ll then need to head out front and chat with Nellie, Fortune’s wife. She’ll inform you that they aren’t around and they went out into the woods, but she doesn’t know why. But she is kind enough to allow you access to her home to search the place further.
When you go inside, the main point of interest is the bed, so examine it, and you’ll be able to perform a Harkening ritual, which reveals that Fortune had once stood over Nellie in bed with the intention of killing her with his tools, but decided against it.
With these strange incidents revealed, you’ll now need to track down Fortune in the woods. So head back to the forge, and use Athea to reveal his tracks further into the woods.
To find Fortune, you will need to follow tracks that will lead you to a cabin in the woods. Here, you will find Fortune surrounded by a group of Possessed Wolves. So switch to Athea and take care of those deranged doggies, which will then allow you to speak to him.
He will inform you that he believes that his tools are haunted and that he was worried that if he kept them, he would end up hurting his wife, Nellie, so he took them as deep into the woods as he could to rid himself of them.
It’s a story that still makes a semblance of sense, but there is still no tie to the spirit that haunts the pair. So, when this conversation ends, head through the shack he was trapped in, and go out the back exit deeper into the forest.
Keep following the Spectral Trail that Athea has revealed and you will eventually come to a clearing where you can see where Fortune has cast aside his tools, tools which seem to be the tie to the spirit that haunts the pair.
To get down, you need to find an area where you can use the Leap power, which you’ll find to the left of the drop overlooking the Hammer, and up a ledge. Leap across this area and then work along the path to the right, where you can attach a rope and rappel down to the area below.
When you get down there, you’ll be ambushed by a number of Specters. Most will try to possess fallen corpses in the area, so try to control Athea when this begins and use Leap to stop them as soon as possible. There are quite a few of them, but they are all basic enemies, so you should be fine.
After you end this fight, take the time to explore the area as there are some Chests and Spectral Webs to find. Then once you’ve cleared the area, return to the center where you will find the Tool from earlier.
Upon touching this Hammer, you’ll see a flashback that takes place in Nellie’s home where the real Fortune is threatening her, and denying her a divorce as he sees her as his property. Then we witness the man we thought was Fortune enter, and then kill Fortune with the Hammer.
This is the tie needed to summon the ghost of Fortune Heayton, and you can do so with a Make-Manifest Ritual, which will also require some Hoof Fungus as well.
At which point you’ll be able to speak with the deeply unlikable Fortune Heayton, a skilled blacksmith, but an all-round terrible dude.
This conversation won’t yield much, but you will confirm that the Heayton you met was an imposter and that the real Heayton refuses to leave the mortal realm until someone ceases to use his identity as their own. Which means it’s time to return to the Hunter’s Camp and finish this.
Will The Real Fortune Heayton Please Stand Up
The best way to head back to camp fast is by using a nearby Shelter and then using the Fast Travel feature, but if you want to explore on your way back, then that’s up to you. Either way, return to the Blacksmith’s home and enter the home to talk to the newly reunited pair.
You’ll then be able to confront them about Fortune’s false identity and get their side of the story. You’ll find out that the man before you is a thief named Arther Carty, and he decided to assume the role of Fortune Heayton to flee from the consequences of his past.
That being said, the pair are still murderers, which makes the whole situation a morality minefield. Which naturally means that it’s time to choose the consequences for these poor souls.
You can choose to Ascend, or Banish Fortune Heayton, you can blame Nellie for killing her husband, or you can blame Arther Carty for his crimes and take his soul.
For me, the clear moral decision here is to banish Fortune, but you are free to do whatever you choose depending on your end-game goals with Athea, and upon making this decision, the quest will end, and the player will receive 1200XP for their efforts.
So there you have it, a quick rundown of how the Hammer and Tongs Haunting Case goes in Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden.
Considering you only have to do one of the two available Haunting Cases in the Hunter’s Camp to proceed, this one is a bit more taxing and could be avoided.
However, the story is great, and the rewards make it all worthwhile, so consider doing this one as well. As always, thanks for reading Indie Game Culture.
