If you fancy yourself as an indie developer, or you just happen to be such a gaming nerd that you find yourself attending developer conferences (like myself), then you will probably be aware of Devcom 2023.
An offshoot of Gamescom that has a number of incredible indie developer talks planned for this year’s event.Â
This year’s Devcom event will run from the 21st to the 25th of August 2023 and will be running out of Cologne, Germany, as will Gamescom.
It’s a gathering much like GDC, which allows developers to get together to discuss the inner workings of game development, and the innovations that have been made in the industry.Â
While it perhaps doesn’t offer as much glitz and glamour as Gamescom, this is an event that really allows attendees to get into the nitty-gritty, and if you are a fan of indie games, and want to know how the sausage is made, then this is the place to be.
The event will host a series of talks, fireside chats, panel discussions, and workshops carried out over 12 live stages.
Plus, for those that can’t attend, you’ll be able to tune in via the Devcom Twitch channel where they will be sitting down for exclusive interviews with big-name devs in attendance.Â
What’s Happening At Devcom 2023
As you know, we view things through an indie lens here at IGC, which means that we will be showcasing some of the most interesting talks strictly within the indie scene.
However, if you want to look at the full line-up, you can do so on the official Devcom site. Here are some amazing talks scheduled for Devcom 2023.
Dordogne: How to Bring Traditional Art to Video Games
Cedric Babouche – Director and art director, Un Je Ne Sais Quoi
Dordogne is a game that we reviewed pretty positively, not necessarily for the gameplay on offer, but for the sheer quality of the presentation alone, and this talk plays up to that.
The devs behind Dordogne plan to sit down and break down how to take initial sketches and transform them into fully realized video game settings.Â
Team 17: A Marriage Story: The Indie/Publisher Relationship
- Marie-Anne Hachey – COO, Threaks
- Jasper Barnes – Head of game scouting, Team17
- Rami Ismail – indie developer
We have been massive fans of Team17’s output in recent years, with positive reviews for a number of their titles, such as Dredge, The Knight Witch, and Killer Frequency, to name a few.
They are incredible developers, but it’s easy to forget that they double up as a publisher, pretty much exclusively for indie projects. Meaning that Team17 is in a unique position to analyze both sides and break down the relationship between indie developers and publishers.Â
Dead By Daylight: Birth of a Horror Franchise
Rose Li – Senior Product Manager (Behaviour Interactive)
Rebecca Polo Garcia – Senior Brand Manager (Behaviour Interactive)
Have you ever wondered how Dead By Daylight became the horror juggernaut it is today.
Well, seven years after its launch Rose Li and Rebecca Polo Garcia intend to show their process, which includes a lot of discussion surrounding the clever partnerships between Behaviour Interactive and some major licensed entities.Â
Beneath The Return of Monkey Island: Q&A with LeCrew
- Ron Gilbert (writer, designer, programmer, and series creator)
- Dave Grossman (writer, designer, and director)
- Zoe Nguyen Thanh (game artist)
- David Fox (game designer)
- Rex Crowle (art director)
Then lastly, we have a Q&A panel with the creators of Return to Monkey Island, the critically acclaimed sequel to Escape from Monkey Island.
The Indie NRW Showcase 2023
