If you’ve made it this far in our Hollow Knight Full Walkthrough, then congrats on taking down the False Knight. We now move swiftly along to the area pretty much immediately after this battle, where you will encounter the Snail Shaman and gain access to your first Spell in Hollow Knight.
Spells in Hollow Knight are really helpful and can be the difference between winning and losing in certain fights, and one that you’ll want to get nice and early is Vengeful Spirit.

Hollow Knight Full Walkthrough – How To Get Vengeful Spirit
Encountering The Snail Shaman
After you defeat the False Knight, continuing left past where you found the Large Geo Cache, you will be able to unlock a shortcut that will lead you back to where you found Cornifer in The Forgotten Crossroads. However, before you head that way, be sure to head up a level, where you will find the Snail Shaman.
After a discussion with them, they will bestow upon you a Spell that will prove to be a huge help when navigating Hollowsnest from here on out. They will conjure it above your head, and you should jump up and grab it.
However, when you do, you will pass out and awaken in a new area trapped behind a Steel Gate, and the Snail Shaman will only let you out again if you slay the Mini-Boss that lurks in the caves ahead. Seems nothing comes from free in this game.
Exploring the Shaman’s Cave
Whether we like it or not, we need to clear out this cave, so proceed right, and when you spot your first enemy, you’ll get a prompt to use Vengeful Spirit.
This is a ranged attack that deals a decent amount of damage and is very helpful in this area to deal with the Baldur (Rolling Beetle) enemies without having to get up close and personal.
The way this works is that with each use, you’ll use up your SOUL meter, which, as you will know, also allows you to heal your Knight. So be sure to decide when is best to heal, and when is best to go on the offensive.
Knowing this, head forward and take out the TikTiks and Baldurs that stand before you. You’ll then need to break through some wooden debris, and you’ll enter an area with Baldur and Vengefly enemies, plus a load of spikes. Play it safe here and use Vengeful Spirit when you can.
This will lead you to an area where you are given two paths. Before heading down, take the path left, and you’ll find a metal statue containing SOUL. Stock up and then climb on. Be on the lookout for Baldurs in this area and scout ahead to ensure they don’t catch you by surprise.
At the end of this optional path, you’ll find a Blue Hanging Sac where you can get some Lifeblood Masks, which will make the battle ahead a lot easier. Then once you grab these, return to the main path and drop down.
Fight With The Elder Baldur Mini-Boss
When you drop down, the path ahead will be blocked by an Elder Baldur. These enemies cannot be attacked by using Melee slashes. They use their bodies as Armor making them invincible. So you’ll need to use Vengeful Spirit.
The Elder Baldur will attack with Fireball Spit, and if there is not a standard Baldur in the battle area, they will spit out a Baldur that will roll around and attack you as well. However, these Baldurs can be used to your advantage as they allow you to recharge your SOUL meter.
You’ll need to hit the Elder Baldur with 4x successful vengeful Spirit attacks, and when you do, they will die, allowing you to progress, and you’ll gain 50x Geo for your efforts too.
Not to mention you’ll get a new Charm called Soul Catcher, which will allow you to accrue more SOUL than normal when it is equipped.
All that’s left to do this is drop down below and speak to the Snail Shaman, who will then let you out to cast Vengeful Spirit upon the rest of the enemies in Hollowsnest.
