Hollow Knight fans still waiting for Silksong can look forward to the release of a joking Zote-themed DLC titled Zoteboat.
For those who haven’t played it, Hollow Knight is a masterful Metroidvania centered around a tiny cockroach-headed hero titled the Knight on an epic quest to save the decaying bug Kingdom of Hallownest from an ancient plague.
Immerse yourself in the hauntingly beautiful world of "Hollow Knight," where every step unveils secrets and challenges waiting to be conquered. With its captivating art style and intricate gameplay, embark on an epic journey filled with mystery, danger, and discovery unlike any other.
Embark on an emotional journey of compassion and friendship in "Spiritfarer Digital Deluxe Edition," where you'll guide spirits to their final resting place aboard your mystical boat. With its stunning hand-drawn art style and heartfelt storytelling, immerse yourself in a unique blend of management simulation and heartfelt exploration.
Though Hollow Knight is still regarded as one of the best Metroidvania’s, it generated a cult following surrounding its characters, particularly the silly, arrogant pushover Zote, who constantly insults the player and takes credit for their deeds.
Despite the side character not achieving anything of note besides stealing our bug girlfriend Bretta, dedicated players founded ZoteBoat, a cult following ironically praising Zote and looking forward to the wacky character as the protagonist of Team Cherry’s third game: Hollow Knight Zoteboat.
However, it seems fans have tired of waiting for Silksong and are making their own Hollow Knight fangames instead, as Tevmes’ fox released a convincing trailer announcing Zoteboat as a standalone fan DLC for Hollow Knight.
Overall, the trailer appears to tell the game from Zote’s delusional point of view, framing the knockoff knight as “the true hero of Hallownest” on a legendary nautical adventure.
With a fighting style consisting of aimlessly flailing his weapon, traversal mechanics centered around sticking his pointy head into platforms, and even flight abilities like turning into a meek zoteling, Zoteboat is a hilarious parody of Hollow Knight’s grim world.
Even if its status as a meme means this trailer might be an elaborate joke, the game boasts impressive abilities like turning into a Great Zote, Falling Giant Zotes, stunning enemies with Zote’s attractive looks, or creating Zote walls to climb with or fight enemies for you.
Further yet, the fanmade DLC offers some narrative twists with Zote rescuing the Knight, fighting friendly NPCs like Quirrel, Cloth, and Tiso, and even framing previous cringy enemies as legendary foes like the Pale Lurker sitting atop a throne.
Though the Zoteboat could just be a prop, the thought of turning Hollow Knight into a nautical open-world is an exciting touch that could turn the buggy adventure into a sailing game akin to Spiritfarer or explore some of the Dead Cell-esk roguelike elements.
Immerse yourself in the hauntingly beautiful world of "Hollow Knight," where every step unveils secrets and challenges waiting to be conquered. With its captivating art style and intricate gameplay, embark on an epic journey filled with mystery, danger, and discovery unlike any other.
Frankly, these are rather ambitious goals for a fangame, but it’s hard not to get excited for a new silly take on the popular Metroidvania.
Is Hollow Knight Zoteboat Real?
Honestly, probably not. The heavy-handed ironic praise surrounding Zoteboat is rather telling, with fans praising it for already coming out or discussing their lord and savior, Zote, on Reddit and Steam forums.
Also, the brief showing of Zote wielding the Hollow Knight AK-47 Hollow Point mod reveals that some of the game’s elements are fictitious.
Even so, it’s not unheard of for memes to create fangames by creating enough praise and ironic hype that fans go on to make the game as an ironic commitment to the bit.
For example, Bloodborne Kart, the ancient meme showing Demastered Bloodborne characters in Victorian-flavored Mario Kart vehicles, is getting a release this January 31st.
Whether Zoteboat remains a meme or inspires a devout fan to realize this hilarious trailer remains to be seen, though hopefully, like Silksong, its release is soon.
